There's an new post on this blog about how the Dead made selections for their keyboard auditions after Brent died. I made some comments, and thought a few of you might be interested -

Thanks for pointing this out, and especially for your comments there.

Brent was a hard act to follow.

great read. Thanks. I recently read something about the Stones keyboard player being in the mix. Chuck nevelle. Not sure if that was rumor or fact but for some reason he popped up as well.

That was an interesting read. From all the bits and pieces I've read about the process, it seems that the issue of vocal harmonies is what really determined who got the keyboard slot. Vince got it because he could sing high - I mean, sing in the upper register :)

I think that shows the kind of pragmatic pressure the band felt - and also the awareness that vocal harmony was always a bit loose in the GD, and something the band always wanted to improve.

In some ways I wish the band had gotten "another Donna" to sing the high parts, and let the keyboardist just play.

I agree with your comment on getting a vocalist and someone just for piano. I don't like the idea of a vocalist but i think how well they play piano is much more important. That being said I think vince has many great moments, but hes no Brent. On top of that I can't really stand vince's voice, like many others.
